Why VCC Men 2026 Is Changing the Rules of Club Golf

Vietnam’s amateur golf scene continues to evolve, and the 2026 Vietnam Men’s Club Golf Championship is introducing a notable change. The tournament, known as VCC Men 2026 – Nam A Bank Cup, will apply new eligibility restrictions designed to make team competition fairer and preserve the spirit of amateur club golf.

Taking place on October 30–31, 2026, at Tam Dao Golf & Resort in Phu Tho, the championship marks a new approach to how clubs build their teams and compete for the national title.

What Are the New Eligibility Rules?

Under the 2026 tournament regulations, two groups of golfers are excluded from participation:

• Golfers under 18: Players born on or after January 1, 2008, are not eligible.

• National team players: Golfers who were members of Vietnam’s national golf team in 2025 or 2026, under the relevant decisions of the national sports authority or Vietnam Golf Association, are also excluded.

These restrictions represent a significant change from previous editions, establishing clearer boundaries between amateur club competition and higher-level competitive golf.

Why Introduce Age Restrictions?

1. Closing the performance gap

Young golfers in Vietnam are increasingly benefiting from structured coaching, physical conditioning and professional training methods. As a result, some achieve exceptionally low handicaps at an early age, creating a considerable gap between them and recreational club players.

In a match-play format without handicap adjustments, this difference can have a major impact on the outcome. Restricting participation helps create a more balanced competitive environment in which teamwork and individual match performance carry greater weight.

2. Giving every golfer the right competitive platform

Junior golfers already have access to dedicated tournaments, national junior championships and amateur events that support their development. National team players also compete in regional and international events suited to their level.

Separating these pathways from club championships allows young talents to develop against appropriate competition while giving amateur club golfers more opportunities to perform and represent their teams.

3. Protecting the spirit of club golf

VCC is built around more than individual scores. It brings together golfers representing their clubs, communities, professional networks and shared passion for the game.

A more balanced field can make matches more competitive and meaningful, allowing more players to contribute to their teams rather than relying on a few exceptionally strong individuals.

A Policy Already Introduced in Women's Club Golf

The eligibility approach is not entirely new. The 2026 Vietnam Women's Club Golf Championship, held at FLC Golf Links Quy Nhon in June, applied similar restrictions.

Extending the policy to the men's championship suggests a broader effort to establish a more consistent competitive structure across Vietnam's club golf scene.

Although the rules have raised concerns among clubs that previously relied on young national team players, the approach has received support from much of the club golf community, according to the original report.

How the New Rules Will Shape Team Strategy

With teams comprising 8–16 players and four golfers required in each handicap group, captains will need to consider depth and consistency when selecting their line-ups.

Key implications include:

• More balanced team selection: Clubs must identify reliable players across different handicap groups.

• Greater emphasis on consistency: Teams cannot depend solely on a few standout golfers.

• Stronger teamwork: Every match can become more important to the overall result.

• More opportunities for amateur players: Golfers who balance the sport with their professional and personal lives may have a better chance to make an impact.

With 12 matches scheduled across two days, a well-rounded team could prove more valuable than a line-up built around individual star power.

Tam Dao Golf & Resort Hosts the 2026 Championship

The championship will take place at Tam Dao Golf & Resort in Phu Tho, which is hosting the Vietnam Men’s Club Golf Championship for the first time.

The venue adds another important chapter to the tournament's development, bringing clubs together for two days of competition in a distinctive golf setting.

Ultimately, the new eligibility rules reflect an important question for Vietnam's golf community: how can the sport continue developing elite talent while keeping amateur club competition accessible, balanced and enjoyable?

By giving different levels of golfers their own competitive pathways, VCC Men 2026 aims to reinforce the values that make club golf special: camaraderie, strategy, sporting integrity and a shared love of the game.
